Symbolism

One is absolute origin — the beginning from which everything else descends. In the Pythagorean tradition it is the monad, the indivisible unity that precedes multiplicity.

History of the number

Present in every civilization as the first symbol drawn by humans — from Sumerian numerals to the Roman tally — One is the oldest and most universal number in history.

Particularities

The only number that leaves others unchanged when multiplying, and the only one that generates all others by successive addition.

In Open2099

Capsule #0000001 is the first key of the Vault: the cornerstone of Open2099. Whoever holds it enters the project's history as its starting point.

Symbolism

Ten is fullness — ten fingers, ten commandments, the decimal system itself. It represents the completed cycle and the return to unity on a higher plane.

History of the number

The Pythagoreans considered it the perfect number — the Tetraktys (1+2+3+4=10) held the order of the universe. It is the foundation of how we count.

Particularities

First two-digit number. First power of ten. The threshold beyond which every number becomes a composition.

In Open2099

Capsule #0000010 closes the Vault's first decade. An iconic ring marking the transition from unity to the measure of the world.

Symbolism

One Hundred is graspable totality — a full century, one hundred percent. A symbol of completeness and maximum reach.

History of the number

From Roman centurions to plebiscitary votes, the hundred has always represented the group acting as one. In modern languages it stands for 'everything'.

Particularities

Square of 10, square root of 10,000. First three-digit number and the fulcrum of all percentage math.

In Open2099

Capsule #0000100 is the Vault's first collective threshold: the entry into a scale that no longer speaks of the individual but of community.

Symbolism

One Thousand is infinity tamed — multitude becoming a number. In many ancient cultures it meant 'a vastness' before it became a precise measure.

History of the number

Marco Polo crossed 'a thousand and one' adventures; the Thousand and One Nights built the imagery of the endless story. The Millennium marks history itself.

Particularities

Cube of 10. First four-digit power of ten. It marks the passage from human scale to the scale of the multitude.

In Open2099

Capsule #0001000 is the middle ring of the seven Legendary: the balance point between the single and the million.

Symbolism

In ancient Greek, myrias (μυριάς) meant both 'ten thousand' and 'countless'. The threshold beyond which the eye stops counting.

History of the number

The 'ten thousand things' of the Tao represent the entire manifest universe. For the Persian army of Xerxes, the Ten Thousand Immortals were the imperishable elite guard.

Particularities

Fourth power of 10. The first number that, to the human mind, ceases being a quantity and becomes an image.

In Open2099

Capsule #0010000 opens Open2099's hall of great numbers. From here onward we enter the scale of civilization, no longer the individual.

Symbolism

One Hundred Thousand is the number of great crowds, cities, populations. It marks the moment quantity becomes collective phenomenon.

History of the number

In ancient inscriptions it appeared rarely — only for censuses, imperial armies, or royal treasuries. Today it is the scale of metropolises.

Particularities

Fifth power of 10. First six-digit threshold. The penultimate anchor of the decimal system before the million.

In Open2099

Capsule #0100000 is the sixth key: the number that precedes fulfillment. The stillness that anticipates the final horizon.

Symbolism

One Million is the Vault's final number — the goal, the chosen limit, the horizon beyond which we do not go. A million capsules, a million possible stories.

History of the number

The word 'million' was made famous in the West by Marco Polo himself — his book of travels was titled 'Il Milione'. It represents the meeting of the imagined and the vast.

Particularities

Sixth power of 10. Last of the seven Legendary. It closes the decimal system chosen for Open2099.

In Open2099

Capsule #1000000 is the final capsule of the Vault. The project's closing seal — the only capsule that, by definition, closes all the others.
